About Abbey
Teacher. Parent. Trustee.
Abbey Picus is a parent, teacher, and member of the Novato Unified School District Board of Trustees.
She and her family are deeply rooted in Novato, where all three of her children attend NUSD schools. That gives Abbey a perspective on public schools that is both professional and intensely personal. She sees the district as a trustee making system-wide decisions, as a teacher who understands what happens inside a classroom, and as a parent watching her own children grow up in Novato’s schools.
Experience in the classroom.
Abbey is an award-winning teacher who has built her career around the belief that great schools depend on strong teaching, high expectations, meaningful relationships, and a willingness to keep learning. Her classroom experience shapes the way she approaches Board service: ask good questions, listen to the people closest to the work, understand the evidence, and take the consequences of every decision seriously.
Doing the work.
During her first term on the Board, Abbey has earned a reputation for being prepared, engaged, and willing to do the work. She has tackled complicated questions involving curriculum, district finances, staffing, inclusion, student support, and the long-term direction of Novato’s schools, while remaining accessible to parents, teachers, students, and community members.
Rooted in Novato.
On most weekends, you’ll find Abbey somewhere around Novato, cheering for her nieces at a soccer game, celebrating birthdays and holidays with family, or talking with local leaders and community members about the place she calls home. Novato isn’t just where Abbey serves; it’s where she and her family have built their lives.
